Restorative dentistry

General Dentistry

General dentistry involves the diagnosis and treatment of various conditions affecting the teeth, gums, and jaw. We emphasize prevention in our Oakley dental practice, because Dr. Ton truly believes that most serious problems can be avoided with routine cleanings and exams. When we can catch an issue early, we can address it using the most conservative treatment plan possible.

We offer many general dental services in addition to cleanings and exams:

  • Tooth-Colored Dental Fillings
  • Porcelain Crowns and Fixed Bridges
  • Root Canal Therapy (Endodontics)
  • Digital X-rays (Less radiation exposure)
  • Laser-Assisted Cavity Detection (Diagnodent®)
  • Dental Sealants (Protect teeth against decay)
  • Fluoride Treatments (For healthier and stronger enamel)
  • Custom Athletic Mouthguards
  • Nightguards (Prevent night-time teeth grinding)
  • Sleep Apnea Treatment

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored fillings are made out of composite materials that blend in with the rest of your tooth, creating a more natural-looking restoration than traditional silver fillings. Composite fillings can be bonded directly to the surface of your tooth, which means they require less preparation and leave more healthy tooth structure beneath the filling.

Dental Cleanings

Biannual teeth cleanings are vital to keeping your teeth and gums looking, feeling, and functioning their best. Proper home care is important too, but there are many things we do in our Oakley dental office that brushing and flossing just can’t do!

During cleanings, our hygienist gently removes plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from your teeth. She also polishes your teeth, flosses to test the condition of your gums, and documents any bleeding or irregularities that she notices during your cleaning.

After your cleaning, Dr. Ton will perform a visual assessment of your teeth, soft tissues, and existing restorations. When X-rays have been taken, he will carefully review them with you to identify potential cavities, cysts, or tumors. He will also screen for signs of gum disease and oral cancer.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Most older teens and young adults will eventually need their wisdom teeth removed. Because wisdom teeth are the last permanent teeth to erupt, there is often not enough room left in the mouth to accommodate them. The lack of space can cause wisdom teeth to come in sideways, only partially erupt, or become impacted within the gums.

The dangers of keeping impacted or partially-erupted wisdom teeth include:

  • Shifting of permanent teeth
  • Jaw pain and headaches
  • Chronic sinus infections
  • Abscesses

Dr. Ton will evaluate the status of your wisdom teeth with a visual exam and panoramic X-rays. If it turns out that they’re not erupting properly, he’ll thoroughly explain your options for removal and help you decide which one’s right for you.

Porcelain Crowns

Dental crowns restore damaged or decayed teeth and protect them for years. They can also be used to attach fixed bridges and top single-tooth dental implants. Crowns can be all-porcelain or a combination of porcelain and metal, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. We prefer porcelain because it provides the most natural looking results.

Fixed Bridges

Dental bridges combine the best aspects of crowns and partial dentures to literally “bridge” the gap created by a missing tooth. In a traditional bridge, the teeth on either side of the missing tooth are shaved down and restored with crowns, which are connected by an artificial tooth that fills the space. Fixed bridges can also be connected to implant-supported crowns if you’re missing more than one tooth or your natural teeth are not strong enough to support a bridge.

Replace Your Missing Teeth

Healthy teeth make it easier to enjoy the best parts of life, from eating the foods you love to smiling and talking without feeling self-conscious. Whether you’re missing teeth or experiencing problems in your natural teeth, such as decay or natural wear and tear, restorative dentistry can help you reclaim your strong and healthy smile.

Dental Implants

Because of their natural appearance and superior function, dental implants are the preferred method of replacing missing teeth. Dental implants can be used in a variety of restorative procedures, from single tooth replacements to full mouth reconstructions.

Dentures

Just because you have dentures doesn’t mean you have to put up with slipping, clicking, and messy adhesives! Modern dentures are incredibly versatile, and they can be customized to look and feel like your natural teeth. Dr. Ton provides partial dentures, full dentures, and implant-supported dentures at Autumn Lake Dental.

Root Canal Therapy

When a tooth is cracked, broken, or severely decayed, the pulp inside of the tooth can become infected. If the pulp is not removed with a root canal, it can cause an abscess or even spread the infection to surrounding teeth. Root canal therapy is a highly successful restorative procedure that can save a damaged tooth from extraction and protect it for many years.

Tooth Extractions

Although we will do everything in our power to help you keep all of your natural teeth for the rest of your life, sometimes an extraction is necessary to preserve your overall oral health. If Dr. Ton recommends an extraction, he will thoroughly explain the process to you and provide the sedation you need to make your treatment as comfortable as possible.

Cosmetic Dentistry

An attractive smile makes a great first impression, and it can really boost your self-esteem too. Dr. Ton approaches every treatment from a cosmetic point of view, whether he’s making a tooth-colored filling look like it’s not even there or giving you a bright, white smile that looks completely natural. Cosmetic dentistry is as much an art as it is a science, and Dr. Ton has an eye for creating a smile so beautiful and natural that no one will ever know you weren’t born with it.

Teeth Whitening

Whitening your teeth is one of the easiest and most effective ways to take years off your smile. If you’re not getting the results you want with drugstore whitening kits, ask Dr. Ton about our professional options!

The KöR® Whitening Deep Bleaching™ system uses a powerful hydrogen peroxide solution to brighten teeth up to 16 shades in two office visits. It’s even been proven to whiten tetracycline-stained teeth, previously thought to be impossible. Would you rather whiten on your own time? Our home whitening kits combine professional-strength gel and custom-made trays to give you the ultimate at-home whitening system.

Veneers & Lumineers®

Veneers are thin ceramic shells that are bonded to the front side of your teeth to change your smile in virtually any way you desire. In some cases, veneers can even be used as an alternative to braces for teeth that are slightly crooked, spaced, or overlapped.

Dr. Ton also provides Lumineers, a less invasive but very durable alternative to traditional veneers. Lumineers require less preparation, so there is usually no need for shots!

Gum Care

Do your gums bleed every time you floss? Do they look red or swollen? You could have gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums that can eventually lead to periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an infection that weakens the gums and bone around one tooth or many teeth. Left untreated, periodontal disease has been linked to tooth loss, infections, and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

If you’re noticing sensitivity, recession, or a change in the color of your gums, schedule a visit with Dr. Ton today. Healthy gums are the foundation of healthy teeth!

Sedation Dentistry

We love what we do at Autumn Lake Dental, but we understand that most people don’t look forward to going to the dentist. A little bit of anxiety is completely normal, which is why we offer comfortable amenities like TVs, blankets, and music headphones to put you at ease.

Still nervous? Sedation dentistry can make it easier for you to get the treatment you need the way you need it. We also have laughing gas (nitrous oxide) to help you relax.
